Women's Xchange: $15K Challenge

Women's Xchange is offering one-time one year grants to support research projects that address women's health issues at the local level.

ELIGIBILITY: Universities/Colleges, schools, hospitals are eligible only if they are working with a community agency that involves at least one eligible organization.

Canadian Frailty Network: 2018 Catalyst Grant Competition

The Catalyst Grant competition will fund submissions that directly address one or more of the following priorities through either research, knowledge translation or quality improvement studies:

  1. How can health systems be organized to provide integrated/coordinated care that would better meet the health and social care needs of older adults living with frailty, and their family/caregivers?
  2. How can care, services and treatments be tailored to meet the needs of older adults living with frailty who are isolated and/or without family/caregiver support or advocates?
  3. What is the impact of community-and home-based services, programs and resources in preventing and managing frailty (including slowing progression and/or minimizing the impact of frailty)?
  4. What are the costs and benefits of alternative models of housing, including multigenerational or shared living, for older adults living with frailty?
  5. What would help avoid unnecessary hospitalizations and emergency department visits for older adults living with frailty?
  6. What frailty-related attitudes, skills and knowledge should health and social care providers have? What are effective ways of improving attitudes and providing skills and knowledge about frailty for health and social care providers?
  7. What would help older adults living with frailty and their family/caregivers recognize when living at home is no longer viable?
  8. What are effective ways of supporting family/caregivers of older adults living with frailty to maintain their own health and wellbeing and/or that of older adults living with frailty?
  9. How can frailty measures be used by health care practitioners, older adults and family/caregivers to inform treatment and care decisions?
  10. What is the impact of exercise and physical activity (including type, duration and intensity) in preventing and managing frailty (including slowing progression and/or minimizing the impact of frailty)?

AMOUNT: Up to $100,000 over 16 months. Proposals must include partners who have committed cash or eligible in-kind contributions on a 1:1 basis to CFN funding.

Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada: Contribution Program

The Office is inviting research and knowledge translation applications that advance its strategic privacy priorities.

The OPC is particularly interested in funding research or knowledge translation projects that aim to promote the development and adoption of Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs). These technologies allow online users to protect their private information by letting them decide what data they are willing to share with third parties and under which circumstances.

AMOUNT: The maximum amount that may be allocated to a single project any any single recipient organization is $100,000

CIHR: Sex- and Gender-Based Analysis (SGBA) Health Policy-Research Partnerships

This funding opportunity will support projects relevant to the following research areas:

  • Involving First Nations fathers/men in healthy child development Government of Canada initiatives.
  • Applying SGBA to investigate consumer perceptions of health product labelling.

CIHR Project Grant

The Project Grant program is open to applicants in all areas of health research that are aligned with the CIHR mandate: "To excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge and its translations into improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products, and a strengthened Canadian health care system".

AMOUNT: Project grant funding levels are proportionate to the requirements of the research proposed, which is expected to vary by research field, research approach, and scope of project activities.

World Anti-Doping Agency: 2018 Call for Proposals

On a yearly basis, WADA promotes and funds scientific research grant projects regarding development, or optimization, of analytical tools for the detection and/or quantification of doping substances or methods, consolidation of the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP); as well as, the pharmacology of prohibited substances and drug cocktails.

Higher priority will be granted to proposals addressing the following:

  • Detection of peptide hormones and growth factors
  • Improved window or limits of detection for prohibited substances/methods (e.g. detection of new long-term metabolites, improved methodologies of detection, etc.);
  • Autologous blood transfusions; and
  • The ABP (e.g. new biomarkers and target analytes of the ABP including its endocrine module, improvement of current models, etc.).

Kids Brain Health Network: Knowledge Translation Innovation Incubator Grant

The purpose of the KT innovation Incubator is to promote and facilitate innovative knowledge translation projects in childhood disability.

AGE-WELL Strategic Investment Program Accelerator Funding

The SIP Accelerator Program supports innovative post-discovery projects focused on the commercialization and/or knowledge mobilization of solutions (e.g. technologies, services, or policies) aligned with AGE-WELL's mission and vision, which is to help older Canadians maintain their independence, health and quality of life through technologies and services that increase their safety and security, support their independent living, and enhance their social participation.

AMOUNT: Up to $40,000 over 12 months.

Banting Research Foundation: Discovery Award

The Banting Research Foundation annually awards the Discovery Award to outstanding new investigators in any area of health and biomedical research who are within the first three years of their independent appointment at a university or research institute in Canada. The intent is to provide seed funding so that applicants are able to gather pilot data to enhance their competitiveness for other sources of funding.

ELIGIBILITY: This competition is open to new investigators at any Canadian university or affiliated research institute who:

  • will be within the first three years of the date of their first career academic appointment at the application deadline date of March 15, 2018.
  • have not been awarded by their institution more than $150,000 in start-up funding (exclusive of support from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation)
  • have not been awarded more than $50,000 per annum in external operating funds at the application deadline date.

NOTE: A department/division head is only permitted to nominate one potential applicant during each annual granting cycle. Please indicate your intent to apply by emailing your Research Officer by end of business day on February 1st.

CIHR: SPOR National Data Platform

The objectives of the SPOR National Data Platform will be to:

  • Create efficiencies in data collection and reduce the time required for researchers to access multi-jurisdictional data.
  • Establish systems of retrieval, standardization/harmonization and linkage of high priority clinical data to administrative and social data to enable richer population-based multi-jurisdictional studies to be conducted.
  • Establish valid and reliable methods for linking primary research data to health administrative, social and and other data to create efficiencies in data collection.
  • Inform and provide innovative and ethical solutions to data access and its use through patient and partner engagement.

AMOUNT: The total amount available from CIHR for this funding opportunity is up to $39,000,000 enough to fund one grant for a term of up to seven years. Funding provided by CIHR must be matched at a 1:1 ratio from non-federal sources. Matching partner contributions can include up to 100% eligible cash equivalent contributions.

Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks (CENGN): Commercialization Support

CENGN will support projects to commercialize promising technology originating in research institutions, start-ups and SMEs. CENGN accepts projects across a wide range of areas including SDN/NFV/SD-WAN, internet of things, data centre and cloud, security, mobile networks, network transport, and network applications.
