Biography
As a Registered Nurse my clinical background is in high acuity settings including cardiovascular care and intensive care. Over the course of my nursing career I have been exposed to many forms of teaching and learning within higher education milieus both as clinical nurse educator and nursing instructor, and have taught across various nursing programs including the Registered Practical Nursing program, the BScN program for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs), and the Second Entry and Collaborative BScN programs.
My program of research as it has developed over the years is specifically focused on exploring experiential education approaches to both foster student success and engage students in active learning. My research work began with exploring IENs’ experiences and understanding of clinical judgment within a simulation-based environment to support their transition to the Ontario workforce. This work led to investigating interactive ways to engage IENs in preparing for the licensing exam.
Curenlty my work involves exploring, developing and implementing pedagogies associated with simulation-based environments including simulated persons (SPs), Virtual Reality (VR), serious games, and eLearning to promote professional competence among students with in higher education milieus and their transition to the workplace. I am the founder and director of the Simulated Persons Methodology Lab (http://spm.info.yorku.ca) a pan-university initiative now supported by the York University Office of the Associate Vice-President Teaching and Learning. I have developed full-fledged and fleshed out model for implementing the methodology across disciplines that will provide learners, including teachers and students, with the tools to apply simulation effectively across the curriculum and within an array of courses and programs, which affords an inexpensive opportunity to provide high-quality experiential learning to undergraduates.
As the co founder of SimXSpace (http://simxspace.com) I strongly value mobilizing innovation in experiential education and redefining the learning experience of students through innovative practices
