Biography
As a nurse, teacher, researcher, and immigrant, I have worked closely with diverse/underserved and marginalized populations in my research. Specifically, my focus has been on immigrant and refugee populations. In my PhD thesis in 2006, I utilized grounded theory to investigate and understand the process of accessing healthcare services by Iranian immigrants living in Canada. While my doctoral study centered on Iranian immigrants' experiences with Canadian healthcare, I have also been involved in various studies related to low-income and immigrant family caregivers, as well as the examination of culturally appropriate assessment practices in an Early Childhood Development (ECD) project. My postdoctoral fellowship at the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology (IIQM) at the University of Alberta involved working on the Edmonton Families First project and conducting a Narrative inquiry of Iranian women living in Canada under the supervision of Dr. Maria Mayan. Since 2008, in my role as an assistant professor and as an associate professor since 2014 at York University, I have been engaged in teaching and leading different research projects related to the quality of life and well-being of older adult immigrants, as well as focusing on the mental health and well-being of racialized immigrant women and exploring intimate partner violence (IPV) in immigrant women living in Canada using qualitative and mixed/multi methods through an intersectional lens.
