Professor Jane Irvine was employed as a clinical psychologist at the Toronto General Hospital for 17 years before joining the Department of Psychology at York University in 1999.  She has been registered as a psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario since 1984. Her area of research and clinical specialization is clinical health psychology with a focus on behavioural cardiology.  She has conducted research into stress and the cardiovascular disease, modifying cardiovascular behavioural and psychosocial risk factors, optimizing adherence to medical and behavioural therapies, and enhancing adaptation to medical technologies such as an implantable cardioverter defibrillator for prevention of sudden cardiac death.  She continues to practice clinical health psychology, seeing clients for a variety of health related problems.  Her therapy orientation is cognitive behaviour therapy.

Current Research

(1) The study of the bio-behavioural mechanisms underlying the effects of negative emotions on the cardiovascular system with a specific focus on myocardial ischemia and cardiac arrhythmias; (2) cognitive-behaviour therapy for promoting health behaviour change and adaptation to illness (e.g., treatment of depression following an acute coronary event); (3) enhancing adherence to health behaviour change (e.g., smoking cessation, diet, exercise, and medication adherence); (4) health risk appraisals and medical decision-making (e.g., developing effective communication interventions to facilitate people's accurate appraisal of health risk and their informed health-care decision-making; increasing understanding of irrational processes underlying personal health-risk appraisals); and (5) quality of life assessment (e.g., the measurement of quality of life in the evaluation of competing treatments).
